Neuromuscular Energising Therapy (NET)
Since its origin, physiotherapy has continuously evolved. I believe that Neuromuscular Energising Therapy (NET) is the next step in its evolution. Physiotherapy is all about using our hands in combination with our knowledge and understanding of anatomy, physiology and kinesiology to detect dysfunction within an individual’s neuromuscular system.
NET fulfils this role perfectly. It is a unifying approach to neurological and musculoskeletal therapy by the investigation of the dynamics of movement through “hands-on” therapy in combination with functional anatomy and movement analysis.
Common patterns of compensation occur in patients suffering movement dysfunction with both musculoskeletal problems and
neurological problems, i.e. the central nervous system drives the change.
Thus musculoskeletal physiotherapists can treat neurological patients and neurological physiotherapists can treat musculoskeletal patients, as the treatment protocols are virtually the same.
Identify the problem/dysfunction
Assess the level or degree of complication
Address any issues of compensation and reasons for it
Devise a plan or strategy of treatment
Treat/rebalance/reduce level of compensation/restore function
Re-assess/evaluate efficacy of input and adapt/continue treatment plan
NET takes into account all aspects of a patient’s make-up, including:-
Physical: resting time, power, age
Emotional: positive or negative characteristics
Environmental: goals and motivation
Treatment must be adapted on a moment-to-moment basis and the clinician should remain optimistic but realistic in their expectations. This does not mean quoting the scriptures written by a neurologist, but based upon clinical reasoning and experience.
If in doubt - ask someone.“Where there’s a will there’s a way.”(This applies to therapist as well as patients)
NET is not merely about techniques and exercises, but is about the interpretation of information gathered during the interaction of therapist and client during the engagement process. Engagement allows an individual to “listen-in” to another individual’s system.
Anybody can perform this process with the appropriate guidance; however therapists are able to channel their knowledge and experience which allows a deeper understanding of the subject.
NET is best suited to the open, expansive or creative mind-set. it is not strictly regimented, but does follow a logical sequence built on strong foundations of movement.
Testimonial (November 2013)
Thank you for a very interesting and enjoyable course. I have been pondering ever since what it was I got from it and felt to share with you what has come up for me. Many of the components of the course were familiar to me - especially from my background working in paediatric neurology - yet how you put it together was very new. I connected immediately to its simplicity and its potential for deep change for the patient. What I particularly liked and found refreshing was the continuous interplay between physio and patient. There was a constant sensory dialogue, a dance of kinds and as a therapist a constant commitment and responsibility through sight and touch to respond to the patient and call for more......... read more.........
